List Discussion: Soviet Infantry and The God of War

Once again, my iron will and legendary restraint have been completely shattered by peer pressure. Thanks in no small part to members of our forum, I've fallen into my third Bolt Action army.

Russians. I'm still not really sure where to start with them, but I started with them anyways!
The seven-man veteran squad I ordered. I hope they got the ears right on my models.

My Desert Rats (900 points or so)

I know you all have kept up with Sonbae's excellent WIP posts showing off the work he'd done for me, but I was so excited to get them I had to photograph them for myself!  I've made an attempt to categorize and point them here, and have come up with around 900 points or so.  The infantry is all by Blacktree Design.

AAR: Battle for the Oasis

Another 28mm Bolt Action game! This time I roped Sean in, and gave him the crash course. He decided to play the Germans, while I again took over the brits. We decided to play "Hold Until Relieved" with a desert Oasis in the center of the board. Again we come to around 900ish points.

My Afrika Korps (900 Points or so)

I wanted to highlight the painting Sonbae did for me and talk about how I've organized the forces a bit.  Of course, I have no idea yet what I am doing with Bolt Action, so take all of this with a grain of salt!  Mostly I just bought some random dudes and had a buddy paint them.  Moving forward, I will add to the force and play a few times to see what I'd like in my repertoire!  All the infantry here are by BlackTree Design

AAR: Soviets vs. Germans: Hold Until Relieved (City Fight!)

Chris Boynton (ProfNexus) set the bar (not The BAR) pretty high when he sent me the first battle report from his group's recent Stalingrad event - but when he sent me his second battle report I was absolutely blown away! Enjoy! - Judson

Fresh off our big Stalingrad themed game day, we decided to assemble some of the best bits of terrain we could find to do another Bolt Action battle report. Tony, Larry and I convened at Dirigo Hobbies in Yarmouth Maine to do battle in the streets once again.

Bolt Action Radio Episode 4

Dano and Judson get Alessio Cavatore to show up at The BAR - and man, turns out Alessio is a great guy to hang at The BAR with! Afterwards, the guys talk about Fall-In, the BoltAction.Net Painting Contest, and a tournament happening in Australia. You can't have a night at The BAR without a little Shop Talk. In this episode, the boys talk about how wrong their impressions and ideas from the week before were, then give you more truisms that will be utterly false next week!

British Grant I by Company B

This is the Grant kit by Company B that I've had sitting around for far too long!  I knocked out the Panzer IV almost as soon as they came in, and then weeks went by before I finished this up.  This kit was a bit more challenging than the Panzer IV to assemble.  Some of the resin detail was chipped away (the chain on the back of the tank I replaced using twisted dental floss as it had crumbled away).  But the detail was generally quite good- the rivets are just right and the metal pieces were in fine shape.  I had to finagle the sand skirts a bit to fit right, but nothing too rough.

AAR: Germans vs. British, Demolition

After a long weekend of introducing people to Bolt Action at Fall-In, there was nothing I would rather do than...
Germans versus British in Demoltion!

...introduce a new player to Bolt Action! My brother, Chris, showed up, looking to get his first game in; so we put some models on the table for a modified Demolition scenario.

AAR: Rumble in the Desert- 8th Army vs DAK

My first game with 28mm figs! Couldn't quite get to 1000 points, but close. I don't remember the exact math, but they're around 950ish each. Eric Turner and I rolled to see who got which army. The mission is Demolition using the objective markers.

I was really excited to see all of the excellent models painted for me by Sonbae.  They look even better in person!

AAR: Maine Historical Wargamers - Stalingrad!

Hey, hey, patrons of The BAR. Here's a sweet Stalingrad-themed battle report from forum member ProfNexus, aka Chris Boynton, and his crew from Maine. Enjoy! - Judson

On October 20, various members of the Maine Historical Wargamers Association assembled at Crossroad Games in Standish for some Stalingrad themed gaming. Photos of the event (including my scenario) are posted here.

In observance of the 70th anniversary of Stalingrad, I got out some appropriate looking terrain and concocted some 1942 flavored lists. The German list was all veteran, 3 squads of infantry, a Marder, a 1st Lieutenant, a medic, an MMG and a sniper. The Soviets got 3 regular squads plus a free inexperienced squad, a regular T-34/76, a regular MMG, 2 veteran SMG squads, and a sniper. Two newbies were on hand to try out the game, so we rolled up Envelopment. The Soviet player then won the roll-off and chose to be the attacker.

The battlefield!

British Infantry!

Greetings Troops,

I recently finished up some British Infantry for Judson and Danno to present at Fall In.  I am but a humble guy and painter as many of you know, I am quite happy to know that Judson is excited about them.  We got them to hit the table in a friendly game of Bolt Action after the live podcast at Fall In this past weekend.

The whole platoon of infantry !
(Joe did a spectacular job painting me up the necessities for a Commonwealth force. I don't want to play my Germans anymore... Thanks a lot, Joe! - Judson)

Painter Spotlight: Brendan Dolan (Plus Bonus Joe Mezz WiP!)

I found out about Brandon Dolan on the same day I got my greedy mits on a copy of Bolt Action. After tearing through the rules, and probably between my (laughable) performances at FoW MW Nationals, I began scouring the internet for quality 28mm WWII painters.
Warlord Games' Crocodile, painted and modeled by Brendan Dolan. Sorry Dano - vehicle-mounted flame thrower; it had to happen sooner or later.

Clearly, I had stumbled upon something greater than "quality" painting with Mr. Dolan! After receiving my first vehicles from him (StuG III, Puma, Hanomag) I quickly ordered more, before other people getting into Bolt Action found out about this guy.
