The Tale of Three Painters

Happy New Year, everyone! Something a little different this week, patrons of The BAR - Tim (TJSKI from the forum) and his crew have a challenge going on in their corner of The BAR (Arizona). He's here to tell you about it, and there's no reason you and your crews can't do the same! He's included some pictures of his group's previous works, so I hope you enjoy, and I hope it inspires you and your group! - Judson

Welcome to a tale of three average gamers in Phoenix Arizona who are going to each build a new 1000 point army for Bolt Action in a four month paint challenge. Here are the details of our little challenge and you can follow our progress on our respective Blogs.

Black Tree Design LMG Team

Over the holiday, I managed to get another unit painted for my Bolt Action army.  This time, I tackled the Black Tree Design US Infantry .30 cal team.

Again, the figures were nearly flash-free and looked very good out of the package.  I could tell right away that these were from a different line and/or sculptor, as the faces are a different style.  I decided to go for a more correct looking color for the '41 jackets and chose Russian Green from Vallejo - I think it turned out well.

A little ding in the barrel, which has been corrected.

The Painting Contest Entries

I have to admit that I wasn't sure exactly what to expect when I kicked off the painting competition. Being a newer site, the best I hoped for was that we'd get some participants, my biggest fear being an arrival at the deadline with no submissions.

And then the BoltAction.Net community absolutely blew me away! I had no idea so many people would get involved. Even more amazing, I had no idea the skill level of the painters perusing our humble corner of the internet! Incredible painters submitted in three categories: Best Painted Squad, Best Painted Team, and Best Painted Vehicle.

With over fifty entries, the judges are going to have quite a time making their decisions, but I'll let you know as soon as we do. For now, please enjoy the entries! They're listed below, in alphabetical order, based on the file names I saved them under - so don't read in to the order of their appearance.

"Portrait of a miniature painter". Now I know what the contest entrants look like. Thank you, google image search.

Bolt Action Radio Ep 6

Dano and Judson get after it again, this time diving head-first into the Armies of Germany book. They also go over an upcoming Bolt Action tournament (Cold Wars!) before Dano absolutely tears into Judson's Commonwealth list. In between, Dano breaks into song, waxes philosophical, and at least once reverts to Olde English. Episode Six is like watching The Hobbit!

Review: Black Tree Design Americans

Black Tree Design had a really good Black Friday sale this year, so I took the opportunity to start up my Bolt Action army for cheap.  Among many things, I ordered the the US Platoon (WW2065) - let's take a look!

These guys came in a bag with 30 dudes with very few - maybe even no - repeat poses.  I was also very pleased that the flashing was minimal and all in easy to trim locations.

Armies of Germany: Pioniers and Heavy Support

It's been a long time since my first look at the Armies of Germany book, and now that I'm hearing rumblings from our Bolt Action brothers way out there in the Pacific that they, in fact, have the American book in their lucky little hands. Might as well give the "old" German book a second look!

"Hey, remember me?"

Commonwealth vs. Germans: Demolition (08DEC12)

Dano and I finally got together for another weekend of gaming (FTX!) and ... Bolt Action ensued.

We rolled up a Demolition at some point over the weekend, and some Commonwealth and Germans squared-off. The Commonwealth forces consisted of eight mostly regular infantry units plus a Bren Carrier and a Crocodile. The Germans brought a smaller, mostly veteran force along with a Panzer IV and a Wirblewind.

As the initial maneuvers unfolded, the Germans decided to seize the initiative. The tanks, one of two 1LT units, and an infantry squad ran to the middle of the table, setting the Commonwealth on their heels.

The Germans waste no time and charge aggressively towards the British HQ!

Bolt Action Radio Episode 5!

Dano and Judson get into it again in Episode Five of Bolt Action Radio. In it, the boys talk about the amazing job forum users have done on their BoltAction.Net Painting Contest submissions. Dano also spreads the word of Bolt Action to various places in the Northeast and conventions are briefly discussed. Additionally, pbeccas offers up a video of his BA collection, the guys talk about transports, and as always, there's shop talk galore!

Bolt Action For Battlescribe

After spending a few minutes on the Warlord Games forum I stumbled upon a poster that mentioned writing his own Bolt Action list builder file for the Battlescribe utility. Having never heard of either (nor having a mobile option for Bolt Action list building) I decided to give it a shot. I was pleasantly surprised by what I found. He's graciously accepted my invitation to talk a bit about the software and his file! Check out his website sometime - http://www.warcolours.net/ - Judson

Battlescribe! Check it out if you're looking for a mobile option!

WWPD BoltAction.Net Painting Contest!

In case you haven't heard, we've been running a painting contest. I expected we'd have some entries, but I had no idea how many. We're still roughly a few weeks away from the December 24th 11:59PM EST deadline, and the entries have been flooding in! While that's amazing by itself, the quality of the work being submitted has been incredible!

A collection of forum user dugkirby's work.

"The Mareth Line 1943" Book Review

Another great Osprey title.
Steve, don't read the following statement: Before this book, I'd never been much of a desert fan. Sure, I appreciated its importance, and the icons that made names for themselves there, but my favorite WWII moments were generally formed by Hollywood. "The Mareth Line 1943", by Ken Ford and illustrated by Steve Moon, changed all that.
